Massage for the elderly

Massage is great for people of all ages, all fitness levels and even those with chronic illnesses, although today I want to mention the benefits of massage for the elderly.

Massage techniques for the elderly are very different, for instance the pressure and stretching motions must be very gentle. Often the healing power of touch is very beneficial for elderly people, and especially people with dementia or Alzheimer's. Gentle massage often relieves symptoms of confusion and anxiety and increases alertness. Stretching motions can aid mobility and light pressure on the muscles can improve the muscle tone, which in turns leads to a better quality of life. The benefits of geriatric massage are well documented and include, reduction of pain from arthritis, can combat depression, and improve blood circulation to mention just a few. It's not such a common practise in this country for the elderly but the advantages are worth it.
